Tips For Staying Young, Healthy & NOT Looking Your Age

The kids are out of school, next week is Fourth of July and I feel like last week was a glorious Memorial Day weekend...

So lets talk summer beauty.

I just turned 37 this year and I have received some interesting compliments in the past few months. People that just meet me, find out how old I am and want to know my secret! LOL

So besides having the experience of being a studio makeup artist for almost ten years (using lots of tips on myself that I found valuable from set,) and working in aesthetics and the beauty field every day... I do have a few secrets up my sleeve. One of my first makeup mentors told me - NEVER keep your tricks to yourself - always share with others... you're never that good! And when you share, it will always come back to you.

So here you go... very simple "Keeping your Youth" tips for the summer and every day.

1. SUN Limit your sun exposure (especially during peak hours). I have wholeheartedly embraced the porcelain skin is beautiful concept. I am Irish & Swedish - say no more... Because I have limited my sun exposure for at least the past ten years and wear sunscreen on my chest, neck and face every day without fail - I think I have postponed some spotting and wrinkles.

- Using a sunscreen with ZINC and TITANIUM DIOXIDE is best - they are the strongest.

2. SKINCARE At a minimum after you turn 30 years old, you need to re-evaluate your skincare. You need something more active for your skin than you did in your 20s. In your 40s & 50s you need something more active than in your 30s. I love the peptides and enzymes. Natural is great but you do need to check for an active ingredient. Vitamin C is quickly becoming a favorite of mine for clients as well as a minimally active Retinol. Exfoliation is the key and treatment for renewal at NIGHT (this is when your skin replenishes itself and rejuvenates).

3. A good ATTITUDE. I have always tried to be a positive person. We are in trying times... Your attitude does make a difference on your appearance and your wrinkles. SMILE at one person a day... Always try to make lemonade from lemons and see the glass half full... try counting one blessing a day - and you will be surprised at how many days it takes for you to run out of things to be thankful for.

4. Nutrition and HEALTH. Simple I know, but very easily overlooked in our busy every day stresses and schedules. I recently lost 15 pounds since the beginning of the year. I started eating! My schedule is so busy sometimes, I was not making time to eat. My metabolism slowed down and I started adding weight. By adding something each day for breakfast, vitamins and oil capsule supplements - small meals and snacks throughout the day, I noticed a difference in my skin, hair and body. I also started hula hooping for a 1/2 hour in front of the TV every other night. I do not enjoy the gym and am usually tired after a long day, so this was manageable. Start with small goals - but make a CHANGE - YOU are worth it.Your skin reflects what is happening inside.

5. MAKEUP For the summer I like to keep it simple. I LOVE tinted moisturizer over my normal skincare. If I have a special event, I use a light foundation or mineral foundation. My skin tends to be dry so I mist the minerals with toner or water after application to elevate the matte/pasty look. I use Cover Girl LASH BLAST, which I swear by for mascara - waterproof only if I am planning on swimming or crying (not everyday). I use like sparkly tones all over my lids with a nice neutral brown or fun plum or green to accentuate my eyes.

For night or special events I will pop some deep plum or charcoal in the corner of my lower lid and slightly in the crease for drama. I use STYLI STYLE - line and seal eyeliner or wet a mineral eye shadow that will stay on all day long! Blush is light and blended and bronzer works well for some glow or color over my porcelain skin. I love to finish with tinted/toned chapstick or a lipgloss. In the summer, I feel less is more and I love to see my skin through the makeup... another reason to take care of your skin.

Well, at least I've been a healthy one!

I'm not a Doctor and what works for me, may not work for you, especially if you feel guilty for following any of my advice if you feel it compromises your personal integrity. The main secret I've found to minimizing sickness and disease can be summed up in one word - AVOIDANCE! This means trying to avoid being around or near sick people and potentially sick people as much as possible. How do I do this? Well a lot of you are not going to like my answers but they work for me:

1. Avoid using public toilets as much as possible, If you can't, always put paper underneath and get out as fast as you can. As a general rule, I try to use my own private toilet only and won't allow anyone in my bathroom. My girlfriend, friends or family can use the guest bathroom, I won't let them enter my bathroom at all.

2. If someone at work shows obvious signs of sickness, avoid them at all costs and try to make it known to your supervisor that he should ask this person to go home and come back to work when healthy. If you work right next to them, see if its possible to temporarily work at another desk. If someone says why, just say the sick worker is distracting you with their coughing, sneezing, etc. I'd also suggest if possible, you get your Office to hold a general meeting about how it is not productive for anyone to come to work sick as it will cause more sickness and loss of productivity, etc. People who come to work sick are not being heroes but carrier villains. Sick leave is there for a reason.

3. Here's where you are now going to call me a miserable excuse for a human being. I would avoid being around people who in all likelihood don't have health insurance and in my personal opinion are more susceptible to being sick, letting things fester and not taking care of themselves as well as they can. I personally think its a disgrace that the United States doesn't have Medical Insurance for everyone. I also would avoid eating at fast food places, cheap bars, etc., as I'm guessing patrons are more likely not to have health insurance as well.

4. If you have to ride public transportation, try to sit apart from everyone as much as possible.

5. If you're on a plane and the person either next to you, in your row, or behind you is coughing or sneezing or exhibiting any kinds of illness, don't be afraid of making an ass of yourself and asking the stewardess to change your seat. The last time I was really sick, I was on a 6 hour flight with no empty seats and the person sitting directly behind me, was coughing non-stop the whole flight. I caught something from him the next day and was sick for 3 weeks.

6. Try to avoid being near kids as much as possible as they're more likelier then adults in my opinion to be sick as they don't take care of themselves as well.

7. If you go to a Doctors Office try to either sit by yourself when waiting or just wait in the hallway and ask them to call you when the Doctor is ready because guess what, sick people wait in the doctors office and why should you get sick from them!

8. If you're married or if you have a girlfriend or boyfriend and your partner is sick, no matter how much they curse you out, try to sleep in a spare bedroom or on the couch. Take the bedroom sheets to the dry cleaner when they've recovered. Whatever you do, avoid all physical contact.

9. If you're at the Post Office or Supermarket waiting on line and someone on the line is coughing, sneezing, smelling of liquor or looking run down go to another line far away or wait till they leave the premises before going online again.

10. Try to always have a full nights sleep, as the less sleep you have, the more vulnerable you are to catching something.

When my children were young I played a silly game with them. Before I could see them, I would hear them coming from around a corner or up the stairs and I would call out, "Who goes there, friend or foe?" They would always laugh and answer, "Friend!" Yes, I was always glad to see their familiar faces even though at times the stress of parenting felt like the answer might be "foe!"

What is stress, anyway? We all have it. Sometimes it can be helpful- when we have a deadline and need to get something done-it can help to push us until our work is done. When it's too much it can also wreak havoc in our bodies, with our emotions and in our relationships. At times we can feel overtaken by stress as if whatever the stress is, it is in charge of us.

How can we in times like these make stress our friend? The answer to this question lies in our ability to be present and know the extent to which we have been giving stress more power to hurt us. How often do we add to our stress by not eating properly, staying up too late, overworking and not allowing time to relax and have fun? We can return stress to a friendly influence in our lives by taking steps to take back our power and focus on what we do have control over.

First, be aware of what stresses you. Whether it's parenting issues, work pressures or financial worries know specifically what is stressing you out. Knowing this will help you to recognize when you need to slow down, get help or pay particular attention to how you are treating yourself.

Next, find out how you are adding to the stress. How are you taking care of yourself? What routines are a part of your life that support you in doing your job and staying healthy? Is fun a regular part of your life? Look at your circle of support to see if you are able to tap into that support when stress is high.

Then make a plan for adding daily practices that strengthen and calm you and get the support to follow through on your plan. The current economic recession has affected nearly every person in this country, some more directly than others. The country's unemployment rate currently stands at 9.4%, with analysts arguing daily on the 24-hour news networks whether this number might pass the even scarier 10% mark. Some cities and regions of our nation are already struggling with a much greater percentage of the population that is out of work. These painful statistics represent much more than a difficulty in keeping up with the monthly bills.

The stress and arguments associated with finances are placing more marriages in jeopardy. your mind and your stress

We all experience stress at some point during our lives and even throughout the day. The important issue is how long you hold on to that stress before you decide to let it go and give yourself a much needed break.

Well one technique that has proved itself to be very helpful is very simply letting the mind go. The peace and overall sense of well being that this offers is actually very powerful and is rather like daydreaming yet it takes you deeper. Obviously the practice itself is very personal and what works for me may not work for you. The technique is so simple that it is very easy to adapt to your own system and can be used anywhere and at any time no matter what the situation. It is also so simple that it can be dismissed as ineffective. However, for me it works wonders.

You need something that is deep. The ocean is obvious and so is the sky. It should be a blue sky with no clouds to truly appreciate the depth. It may also be a clear starry sky or a deep lake or even a painting that has depth and perspective. If you are really stuck then a dark coloured carpet or even wall will work. In other words you want something in which you can completely lose yourself.

Very simply stare deep into your chosen subject and let your mind go completely free. Deliberately relax all your muscles and joints and limbs and completely and totally surrender to the depths that are in front of you.

Do not focus on your stress, do not try to release it or solve whatever problem you may have just let everything go. Problem, solution, stress, ideas, notions, judgements just let them all drop away and allow your free mind to expand and flow into the very depths of the universe.

The sensation you want is the same sense of relief you experience when you finally put the bags of groceries down after carrying them home. You want that same feeling but you want your mind to feel it. Perhaps visualise carrying a very heavy object and then mentally just drop it. As you do so "drop" all your limbs and muscles and joints. Unclench your jaw and allow even your eyes to relax as you then stare deep into the cosmos.

This may sound like a very simple technique. Well it is and it works wonders. Even when you are not faced with anything stressful you can use this method just for the sheer joy of it. It only needs to be for a minute or so to get a quick respite during your working day. It can be used as you lay in bed. Perhaps paint a mural on your ceiling or place a poster there for you to disappear into and explore the surroundings.

So take time out daily and spontaneously to release your mind and release your stress. Yes it is simple but that is the beauty. You do not have to think about it; you just release and flow and extend.

overcoming emotional stress

In all cases, a rush of chemicals flood the body and you are partially disabled. The variation is wide and is experienced and managed in many ways. The biggest error humans make is in attempting to change the situation or circumstance in order to gain the relief that is desperately sought. Sometimes changing the situation seems impossible further heightening the perceived threat. Depending on the strength of the emotions, in unusual situations people will in a moment of overwhelming emotion attempt to take someone's life for that emotional relief.

There is a deep conflict in emotions, the way we want to experience it and the way we are experiencing it. When we are feeling these 'negative' emotions it is because there is a question or a series of questions needing to be answered.

Every parent for instance can remember a time when they didn't know where their child was and a great fear arose. There were thoughts of never finding them again. As soon as the question to their whereabouts is made relief douses the flames of fear, then there is a great feeling of relief.

Another example might be when you go out only to find your car is missing and after a few seconds you remember you left it in front of your neighbor's house, something you never do.

Yet for that moment, a rush of chemicals flooded your body in response to whatever beliefs and assumptions were most reactivated, a sense of panic took over. Remember the body's multi-sensory capacity is reading the environment and 400 billion pieces of data are being interpreted per second causing the brain to produce 100,000 chemicals per second and sending them to the cells of the body. This is done at an incredible speed. When you round the bend and see the tiger staring you in the face, you feel the adrenalin rush now!

And you can never really know how a person will react to great trauma because of it. Some people who have learned to suppress their feelings appear to be quite hardened, yet if those energies are uncapped it might reveal to you an entirely different person.

The primary context necessary to understand is the principle that energy, realized as feelings and emotions, precedes all realities real or otherwise. When you look at the situation from this principle and re-tell the story, create a better feeling interpretation, chemicals to the cells of the body are altered and a sense of relief begins to be felt.

A significant number of emotions are based on the belief that the unknown is reason for being fearful. If you can locate the question that wants an answer and then you can gain awareness to the answer, you will alter your perception and your experience. What is it I don't now know, the knowing of which would allow me to release these emotions?

Sometimes there is a grip so tightly applied to certain negative emotions that our hanging on to it seems like the only thing that can be done to avoid what their fear is about. Generally speaking few have practiced the noticing of where the emotions are in the body.

Try this if you'd like as a demonstration. I'll tell you to do something and when I do, stop reading for about fifteen seconds. Then skip to and read the last paragraph of this article. Okay, see if you can relax all of your body muscles from the shoulders up?

Now let's look at emotions and what will allow us to release the grip. If you pay attention closely when your emotional state is buzzing high you will notice that you are having thoughts. If the emotional shock is too intense it may be difficult to even follow them as it will be difficult to focus.

If your aim is to reduce the intensity and grip the emotion has on you, make a quick list of whatever thoughts you are having. This may be in the form of phases, or sentences and key words. Now I said earlier, energy which shows up as feelings and emotions give rise to the thoughts you are having. Once you have those thoughts it sends additional signals to the brain which release more chemicals causing you to think more of the same thoughts and feelings.

So what happens when you deliberately reach for better feeling thoughts about the situation and circumstances at hand? You send new information to the brain manufacturing new chemicals, which are sent to the cells of your body and you begin to feel a degree of relief. By continuing to reach for better feeling interpretations about the present reality you attract new possibilities.

Once you sense a bit of relief you can locate the feeling in your body and release it by simply intending it to pass out of your body through perhaps an imaginary door in your chest. You can actually feel yourself releasing your grip on the emotion.

It does not mean you do not care about the situation; it just puts you in a place where you can react appropriately and of course in your best interest. Often times you will see events and circumstances alter before your eyes. What looked to be a certain resulting negative outcome turns out rather well. Develop a strong knowing that energy precedes everything, all those interpretations we deem good or bad, just or unjust, right or wrong, they are all influenced by the present feelings.

You can take the juice out of the emotions by reaching for better feelings interpretations, and a better story. Even though it may seem strange Allow yourself to take a few deep breaths and begin by saying things as simple as - 'everything is going to be ok', 'things will work out', 'all things pass', 'things have always worked out for me'. This practice is aligned with the law of attraction which states what you give your attention to you attract.

These starting statements or variations you might have will be interpreted by the brain in a more positive and hopeful manner slowly giving you some breathing room, not much maybe, but enough to continue to upgrade the level of interpretation and a lessening of the emotional grip.

At the same time breath in and out and on the outflow feel and imagine the release of knotted energy flowing out of you. Keep letting it go. This does not mean it will all be gone but it will reduce its grip on you. It is possible to completely release all the emotion, especially when you have become trusting and skilled in your focus. In the beginning you will have a tendency to retreat to your dominant emotions until your emotional being remembers rightly that it is governed by your higher aware self. You may even find that certain issues begin to clear up just in the process of life.

Now relax some more, let your jaw drop and relax it some more. Did you find that you actually were still holding it without really being aware of it? We do the same thing with emotions we are unconsciously holding onto, in fact that we are gripping tightly to. Now return to where you left off.
